Vintage Japanese Yamanaka-shikki carved lacquer bowl. Made from Keyaki wood, it features hand chip-carved / hammered interior and sculptural, faceted rim. The underside features traditional Hegime carving. This decorative shaved texture is meticulously applied by hand using a chisel to create a non-slip, tactile surface.
The bowl is finished with Fuki-Urushi, a method where natural lacquer is rubbed into the wood, wiped off, and repeated dozens of times. This technique retains a lightweight feel while showcasing the subtle grain of the wood.
Size - 24cm diameter x 6cm H
Period - Late Shōwa era - c.1980
Production - One off artisan piece
