Born from the ancient temples of Kamakura, this fine lacquerware represents an 800-year-old tradition of Japanese craftsmanship. Originally developed by Buddhist sculptors during the 13th century, Kamakura-bori is defined by its expressive, hand-carved depth and fine Urushi lacquer finish.
Unlike standard lacquerware, each piece is meticulously hand-chiselled into Katsura wood before being layered with coats of black resin. This unique "carve-first" technique creates a striking three-dimensional texture that captures light and shadow beautifully. Renowned for its incredible durability, Kamakura-bori is designed to age beautifully with the lacquer growing more transparent and lustrous with every decade of use / display.
