Japanese Negoro Lacquer Vase

£110.00

Japanese hand-crafted wooden vase with minimalist form, finished in Negoro lacquer.

Negoro refers to rustic and simple lacquerware that has been coated with black lacquer (urushi) and then layered with a topcoat of red lacquer (urushi). This lacquering style was originally applied to utensils used by monks in training at Negoro-ji, a Zen temple that prospered from the Kamakura period (1185-1333 CE) to the Muromachi period (approx. 1336-1573 CE). Negoro lacquerware changes over time as it is used, with the red lacquer fading to gradually reveal the black lacquer beneath.

  • Size - 21cm H x 10cm W

  • Functional - can hold liquid

  • Made in Japan, Showā era (1926-1989)

  • Condition - Very good vintage condition, no chip or loss to the lacquer
